What is it about the Fleur de Lis that is so intriguing that we want to decorate our homes and adorn our necklaces, key chains and purses with it? Perhaps it is it’s unmistakable look and beauty, its elusive, unusual looking three petal flower that exudes elegance and regal distinction.
Pronounced “Fluhr-duh-lee”, with its singular form: Fleur de Lis, and its plural: Fleurs de Lis, it is commonly capitalized and also acceptable when written in lower case letters. Translated from the French language to English, it means: “lily flower” (though some resources have stated that the actual symbol can signify a lily or an iris). It is primarily associated with the French monarchy. Its actual shape, however, has been documented in many ancient civilizations through artifacts, including the Egyptians. In Christianity, the Fleur de Lis has long been believed to signify the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is said that lilies sprang from the tears of Eve and The Virgin Mary. Back in time, murderers were said to have been marked with the Fleur de Lis. Today, the Fleur de Lis serves as a symbol of the Spanish monarchy. In France, though it has never been formally endorsed by any of the French republics, it continues to prominently remain in the public eye as a symbol of France. In the Untied States of America, the Fleur de Lis, is nowhere more visibly celebrated than New Orleans, Louisiana. It was first introduced there when the land was under French rule and dominated by French settlers. Today, it is proudly displayed by Louisiana inhabitants throughout the state and on the helmets of the New Orleans Saints NFL team. Nowadays, decorating a home or buying a “blingy” personal effect with the Fleur de Lis has never been easier! With its current popularity, this symbol is readily available in a wealth of items that can fit just about any price range- if you know where to shop! We know where to shop…MudPie Home Boutique!!
